Dark Mode Design Method: Converting user interfaces to dark mode

With dark mode becoming increasingly widespread in graphical user interfaces, it has become apparent that there is a lack of knowledge on how to properly design for it. Research shows the need for better guidance to be established for designers. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to investigate if a design method could provide sufficient guidance when designing dark mode. A design method, with the purpose of converting light mode GUI to dark mode, was created. Six inexperienced designers tested the method and performed a qualitative interview. Combined with a heuristic evaluation of the test results, a conclusion was made that the design method was effective in providing guidance that increased design quality and time efficiency.
